April 2008

Dear Friends and Neighbours,

Last fall a flyer was circulated in our neighbourhood to see if there was enough local interest in creating a community garden in Garrison Creek Park. Well, there indeed was. Residents from Shaw, Acores, Minho, Marchmount and Ossington streets have come together to form the Garrison Creek Park Community Garden Association. Building of the garden has now begun. The aggregate base has been delivered and will be followed by the installation of a shed, the raised beds and a fence to enclose the entire area. City Parks are also supplying soil and compost.

The entire garden area measures 110 by 30 feet just north of the CP fence and in-between the 2 eastern lamp posts. There will be approximately 28-30 garden plots 4 by 8 foot in raised beds available when finished. Some plots will be assigned to serious individual gardeners who will be responsible for constant tending of those plots. Some will be assigned to groups and kids wishing to learn and grow with the community without the obligation of constant attention.

We have almost reached 100% membership and will do so soon. It’s not to late to join however. Currently we are preparing our rules and regulations, website and so forth. To receive information, ask questions, get on the membership list and waiting list when applicable please contact us at garrison.creek.park@gmail.com. And for updates on the status of the garden, visit this website often!

On Tuesday, April 22 (Earth Day!), several garden members spent part of the evening spreading the aggregate across the garden area. Councillor Joe Mihevc managed to show up to help out as well – here’s a shot of everyone taking a break from their work.
